how do computer networks work?

Computer networks connect nodes like computers, routers, and switches by using cables, fiber optics, or wireless signals. These connections allow devices in a network to communicate and share information and resources.

Networks use a set of protocols, which define how communications are sent and received. These protocols allow devices to communicate with each other. The most common protocol used is TCP/IP which stands for Transmission Control Protocol, Internet Protocol.

The main purpose of TCP is to ensure data delivery and integrity through a system of checks and acknowledgements while IP is used to send data from one device to another. If a device wants to communicate over a network, it must obtain an IP address that uniquely identifies it, similar to a phone number.
