What is a Computer network?
Computer networking refers to the interconnection of computing devices, such as laptops, desktops, servers, smartphones, tablets, and an ever expanding array of IoT devices such as cameras, smart home devices, wearables, smart locks and various sensors. Each of these devices are then able to exchange data and share resources with each other.
Specialized systems such as switches, routers, access points and servers form the foundation of computer networks.
Switches are typically used to connect devices within a local area network. They link devices within a business or home in order to share network resources.
Routers are typically used to connect networks to other networks. They allow devices to share data over the intra/internet. Without routers, people wouldn’t be able to use the internet to collaborate, communicate or gather information.
Access Points allow wireless-capable devices to connect to a wired network. Think Wi-Fi.
Servers are specialized high-powered computers that store and serve content (web pages, files, videos) to users in addition to hosting applications and databases. They typically allow the exchange of services and data over the internet.
