what is a network security threat?

Now that we understand the basics of what a computer network is and the benefits associated, lets explore some of the drawbacks by introducing a few network security terms you should become familiar with. Vulnerabilities and threats. A vulnerability are weak points in physical devices or software which present an opportunity for cyber attackers. Cybersecurity threats are specific attack methods that exploit those vulnerabilities. These threats could be any situation or occurrence that can have negative consequences for a business's operations, functions, brand, reputation, or perceived image. Some of the most common threats include:

  1. Viruses - malicious programs that spread through computers and networks.

  2. Phishing - attackers targeting users through email, text messages, or social media sites.

  3. Ransomware - a form of malware that results in an attacker holding their victims computer or data hostage.

  4. SQL Injection - attackers exploit vulnerabilities in the application code used in databases.

  5. DDoS - involves attackers flooding servers with large volumes of internet traffic to disrupt services or take websites offline.

  6. Malware - malicious software designed to damage target systems.

  7. Man-in-the-Middle - hijacking sessions between network devices.
